This specimen is one of a series struck 1844-50 at Guadalupe y Calvo. The first specimen was lot 1820 in Jean Elsen sale 84. The second specimen was lot 21203 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[2] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Escudos, 1848-GCMP. NGC AU-53. RARE mint and highly desirable. Well struck with moderate wear consistent with the grade. Lustrous with light attractive tone and quite good eye appeal. Seldom offered and quite the treat for the specialist of Republican Escudos." Long^[1] notes this date as the commonest of the mint but still extremely rare. Long could find none offered for sale in 30 years for the 1844GC, 1845GC or 1846GC.
