Mexico 1846-GC MP 4 reales
Shown is an 1846GC-MP 4 reales, one of a type struck 1827-1870. Assayer MP is the only recorded for the Guadalupe y Calvo mint, which struck 4 reales 1844-50. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which GC is by far the scarcest.
This specimen was lot 14258 in Heritage sale 410 (Long Beach, June 2006), where it sold for $2012.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cap and Rays 4 Reales 1846 GC-MP, cleaned VF-XF details with some softness in the central areas and minor rim bruises. One of the truly elusive mints in the 4 Reales series."
