SB1122-72642r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72642 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1846-Ca RG. Chihuahua Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. Early dates from the Chihuahua mint are normally crude and of lower grades. This slate gray toned example is far better than most." The Chihuahua mint was opened in 1811 by the royalists during the War of Independence and operated until 1822. It seems to have closed until 1831, when it resumed striking eight reales of republican design. Many of the early dates are rare but this one is one of a run of somewhat available dates, 1842-50. The mint was closed in 1895. Assayer RG is noted for 1839-57.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.2, DP-Ca17.
