Aureo sale 269, lot 710

This specimen was lot 710 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1846. México. Guadalupe y Calvo. MP. 8 escudos. AU. Acuñación floja en reverso. Bonito color. Ex Colección Caballero de las Yndias, nº 483. Escasa. 26,86 g. MBC+. (Mexico, eight escudos of 1846, Guadalupe y Calvo mint, weak strike on reverse, good color, from the Caballero de las Yndias collection, good very fine.)"

The specimen shown is one of a series struck 1844-52 at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint. That mint struck all the silver and gold denominations used during the republic, from the quarter real to the eight escudos. None are common, tho the gold tends to appear more often than the silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
