Mexico 1846-GC MP real

Heritage sale 3042, lot 30175

This specimen was lot 30175 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic Real 1846 GC-MP MS63 PCGS, Guadalupe y Calvo mint. Choice Mint State with strong mint luster and attractive surface quality for the designation. A truly remarkable representative of this very scarce issue, currently the finer of only two Mint State certified examples by either major third party grading service, and the finest seen by the cataloguer. The other, a lesser MS62 NGC coin hammered for $4,750 in Stack's Bowers 2011 Baltimore auction (Stack's Bowers & Ponterio 3/2011, lot 8186)." This specimen was struck at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint in 1847. This mint struck silver and gold coins 1844-51, all with assayer MP. The issues of Guadalupe y Calvo are the third rarest mint after Estado de Mexico and Hermosillo.
