Künker sale 353, lot 3594

This specimen was lot 3594 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €130 (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1/48 Taler 1753, F, Magdeburg. Prägung für die Mark Brandenburg. Fast vorzüglich. Erworben am 1.6.1984 von Udo Gans, Arnsberg. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, 1/48 thaler of 1753, Magdeburg mint, struck for the mark of Brandenburg, about extremely fine.)"

This date and type is not listed in the SCWC. KM 250 of 1750-53 and KM 275 of 1753-63 both have the date on the obverse while this issue has the date on the reverse. Altho valued at 1/48 thaler, this coin had only 1/53 as much silver. The weight was reduced to 0.97 g in 1764. Numerous varieties exist.
