Künker sale 353, part of lot 3686

This specimen was part of lot 3686 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €320 (about US$445 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Mariengroschen a) Mariengroschen 1753 D, Aurich. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Adler mit Schwert und Reichsapfel. Exemplar der Slg. Ostfriesland, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 90, Osnabrück 2004, Nr. 4538. ...RR 2 Stück., Sehr schön und sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, mariengroschen of 1753, Aurich mint, struck for the western provinces; eagle with sword and orb. Rare, [one of] two pieces, very fine and very fine to extremely fine.)"

Aurich was the capital of the county of Ostfriesland, which was ruled by its native princes until the extinction of the line in 1744, whereupon it fell to the Hohenhollerns, who retained the mint there. In 1750, the mint was assigned the mintmark "D". The Prussians lost the province to Napoleon in 1807 and it passed to Hannover at the Congress of Vienna. This type was struck 1752-56. The SCWC notes that one thaler was 36 mariengroschen.
