Künker sale 353, lot 3697

This specimen was lot 3697 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €220 (about US$306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Ku.-1/4 Stüber 1753, D, Aurich. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Die Buchstaben F und R des Monogramms mit getrennten Grundstrichen. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Berliner Münz-Cabinet 10, Berlin 1979, Nr. 3316. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, copper quarter stuiver of 1753, Aurich mint, struck for the western provinces. The letters F and R of the monogram have separate stems. Very fine.)"

Aurich was the capital of the county of Ostfriesland, which was ruled by its native princes until the extinction of the line in 1744, whereupon it fell to the Hohenhollerns, who retained the mint there. In 1750, the mint was assigned the mintmark "D". The Prussians lost the province to Napoleon in 1807 and it passed to Hannover at the Congress of Vienna. This is a two year type of 1753-54. The SCWC notes that one thaler was thirty or 54 stuber, depending on which thaler one used.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 3,16 g.

Catalog reference: KM 219 (listed under East Friesland), Olding 265 a; Kluge 286.1.
