This specimen was lot 30813 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. Johann Friedrich I 2/3 Taler 1678 MS63 NGC. Large ships variety. A sublime representative of this one-year type with a deeply impressed strike and nearly all details fully rendered. The surfaces are mottled with a variety of tones--russet color that gathers around the obverse devices and bluish-gray patina that dapples the reverse--while an exciting amount of original luster brightens the fields, further adding to the impressiveness of this selection. Conditionally scarce and currently the only Mint State example of the type certified by NGC." This type was struck 1675-78 in numerous varieties; some with the bust facing left, others with the bust facing right along with various arrangements of sailing ships on the reverse. These two-thirds thalers (or gulden) are often more available than the larger thalers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 187.
