Sincona sale 11, lot 805

This specimen was lot 805 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$929 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND -Calenberg-Hannover Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. Taler 1679, Clausthal. Auf seinen Tod. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, John Frederick, 1665-79, thaler of 1679, Clausthal mint. on the death of the duke. Good very fine.)"

This type is one of several issued on the death of the duke. His descendant became king George I of England in 1714.
