Brunswick SB819-20583r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20583 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Well Pedigreed and Rare Brunswick "Ex Duris Gloria" Broad Taler. GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover. Taler, 1676. Clausthal Mint. Johann Friedrich I. NGC MS-63. The discipline of Brunswick Talers and their multiples seems endless, some break a barrier style-wise like this beauty and do not entrap themselves among the masses. This is a handsome broad taler boasting fine originality throughout with its iridescent cabinet toning complementing sharp striking. The rich baroque portraiture of the period pairs finely with its charming reverse design; exhibits sharp details with medallic clarity. The Latin reverse legend 'Ex Duris Gloria' translates most accurately as "From suffering arises glory." Formerly from the 2016 Cape Coral Collection sale and prior to that the Grundy Collection. A RARE type and a superb piece. From the Downing Collection. Ex: Cape Coral Collection. Ex: Grundy Collection."

This type was struck 1675-76 and resembles numerous other thalers struck at the time, especially Dav-6570 of 1673 with short hair.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-6573; KM-149.2.
