Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1676 2/3 thaler KM-171
This specimen was lot 77221 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 2/3 Taler, 1676. Johann Friedrich. PCGS Genuine--Corrosion Removed, Unc Details. From the G. L. Hermann Collection." This issue was part of the fad for striking this denomination which swept north Germany in the 1670's. Many obverse and reverse varieties exist. John Frederick shocked his family by converting to Catholicism in 1651. He died in 1679, leaving only daughters, and was succeeded by his youngest brother Ernst Augustus. The SCWC lists the following gulden for 1676: KM 171 (laureate bust right, reverse with "RB"), KM 172 (bust left), KM 187 (bust right, "FEIN SILB" on reverse), KM 188.1 (bust left, tall rock on reverse). We are filing this under KM 171, even tho this example lacks the laurel wreath on the bust, as the other varieties are either bust left or have "FEIN SILB" on the reverse.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, 35 mm diameter.
