Künker sale 335, lot 3814

This specimen was lot 3814 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,188 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. Reichstaler 1676, Clausthal, auf die 100-Jahrfeier der Gründung der Universität Helmstedt am 15. Oktober. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, winz. Graffiti, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, thaler of 1676, Clausthal mint, on the centennial of the foundation of the university of Helmstedt. Rare, attractive example with handsome patina, light graffiti, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Many of the thalers of this state, such as the leaping stallion thalers or the wild man thalers, are common, but this commemorative is rare.
