This specimen was lot 32851 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg. Johann Friedrich 2/3 Taler 1677 XF40 NGC. Variety with upright ships flanking the palm tree on reverse. Somewhat crude, yet strong hair details for the grade." This type was struck 1675-78 in numerous varieties; some with the bust facing left, others with the bust facing right along with various arrangements of sailing ships on the reverse. These two-thirds thalers (or gulden) are often more available than the larger thalers. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
