from Künker sale 354, lot 5639

This specimen was lot 5639 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €180 (about US$251 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 1/3 Taler 1676, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. Feine Patina, sehr schön. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Gitta Kastner 11, München 1976, Nr. 1120. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, one-third thaler of 1676, Clausthal mint, for the St. Andrew mine. Fine patina, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1676-78 along with KM 183 (bust left) and KM 147.2 (bust right). One third thaler = half gulden. John Frederick shocked his family by converting to Catholicism in 1651. He died in 1679, leaving only daughters, and was succeeded by his youngest brother Ernst Augustus.
