Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg (1671-79) 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 1525 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €280 (about US$324 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BRUNSWICK-CALENBERG, Johann Friedrich (1665-1679), AR 1/3 Taler, s.d. (1671-1679), Hanovre. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à g. R/ Palmier sur un îlot rocheux. Un navire croisant au large. Belle patine. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, undated silver one-third thaler, Hannover mint. Obverse: draped and armored bust left; reverse: palm tree on a rocky island, a ship crossing the bay to the right. Nice patina, Extremely Fine.)"
This scarce type is also known dated 1676. One third thaler = half gulden. John Frederick shocked his family by converting to Catholicism in 1651. He died in 1679, leaving only daughters, and was succeeded by his youngest brother Ernst Augustus.
