Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1679 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73279 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 12 Mariengroschen, 1679. Zellerfeld Mint. Johann Friedrich. PCGS AU-55. KM-136; Welter-1765. Despite its smaller planchet, this minor nevertheless yields a depiction of the ever-popular wildman with great character. Meanwhile, the iridescent toning augments its overall flair that much more. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1669-72 and 1675-79 and was worth one-third thaler or one half gulden. There is also KM 123 with a leaping stallion reverse but it was not issued in 1679.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
