Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1684 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73555 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1684. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS AU-55. Warm gray tones grace the surface of this piece with highlights of russet and gold in the peripheries. Struck on a well-prepared flan, all of the design devices and lettering are equally strong throughout and confess only light wear. A solid, attractive example of the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." This 12 mariengroschen with a wild man obverse was struck 1680-92. Confusingly, the SCWC shows a completely different coin struck in 1602.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
