Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1683 2 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 41352 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 2 Mariengroschen, 1683. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS MS-62. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1680-84, 1688-90 along with KM 276 (leaping stallion reverse). It was the smallest denomination struck in good silver and was worth 1/18 thaler or 1/12 gulden. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
