Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74689

This specimen was lot 74689 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Calenberg-Hannover. 2/3 Taler, 1683-HB. Clausthal Mint. Ernst August. NGC AU-58. Popular prancing stallion motif. Appealing ash gray toning with impressive underlying luster." This denomination, equal to a gulden in south Germany, became very popular in the 1670's. Ernest August's son, Georg, became elector of Hannover and later king of England. The dynasty lost Hannover in the nineteenth century but still rules in Britain. Two KM numbers could apply to this issue but KM B264 lacks a photo.
