This specimen was lot 42890 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. 1/8 Taler, 1679-HB. Johann Friedrich (1665-79). NGC MS-66. Small size (25.8mm) variety of this one year type struck to commemorate the death of Johann Friedrich. Immaculate quality with sparkling brilliance in the undulating centers and attractive blue and mauve tone that partially surrounds the edges. Easily the finest certified of its kind." An extensive series of coins was issued to mark the death of the duke, including KM 216 (1/8 thaler), KM 218 (1/4 thaler), KM 219, 220 (1/3 thaler), KM 221, 223 (1/2 thaler), KM 225 (2/3 thaler), KM 234, KM 235 (thaler), KM 237 (1½ thaler), KM 238 (2 thaler), KM 240 (3 thaler), KM 241 (4 thaler), KM 243 (5 thaler), KM 244 (6 thaler), KM 247 (8 thaler), KM 249 (10 thaler) but no gold.
