Künker sale 400, lot 38

This specimen was lot 38 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$9,730 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. Löser zu 4 Reichstalern 1679, Clausthal, auf seinen Tod. Mit Wertpunze. Münzmeister Heinrich Bonhorst. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel, unten die eingepunzte Wertzahl//21 Zeilen Schrift. Von größter Seltenheit. Felder geglättet, sehr schön/vorzüglich. Exemplar aus Altbestand der Preussag in Goslar, erworben am 28.02.1977. Exemplar der Preussag Collection, Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 200. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, quadruple thaler of 1679, Clausthal mint, on his death, with value punched in. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right, value punched in below; reverse: 21 line inscription. Extremely rare, fields smoothed, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This is one of a long series of thalers and multiple thalers issued on the occasion of the death of the duke in 1679. His descendants became electors of Hannover and then kings of Great Britain.
