Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1679-RB 1/16 thaler
This specimen was lot 5653 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €220 (about US$306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 1/16 Taler 1679, Zellerfeld, auf seinen Tod am 28. Dezember. RR Herrliche Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Erworben 1983 von Numismatik Hans-H. Dieter, Braunschweig. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, one sixteenth thaler of 1679, Zellerfeld mint, on his death on December 28. Very rare, superb patina, about extremely fine.)"
This is one of an extensive series of commemoratives marking the death of duke Joahnn Friedrich. Another 1/16 thaler, struck at Clausthal with initials "HB", bears catalog number KM 215.
