Künker sale 293, lot 659

This specimen was lot 659 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €400 (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 2/3 Taler 1678, Hannover. Winz. Kratzer, fast vorzüglich. (duchies of Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick Wolfenbuttel, John Frederick, 1665-79, two-thirds thaler of 1678, Hannover mint. Minor scratches, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1678 only in numerous varieties; some with the bust facing left, others with the bust facing right along with various arrangements of sailing ships on the reverse. These two-thirds thalers (or gulden) are often more available than the larger thalers.
