Lubeck 1678 2/3 thaler KM-62
This specimen was lot 11582 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €145 (about US$151). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. 2/3 Taler, 1678. Lübeck Mint. August Friedrich. NGC EF-40. Old ink inventory [number]. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Leopold Wenzl v. Wellenheim Collection (Copenhagen-1880) Lot # 5140." The bishopric of Lübeck was established in the twelfth century. Like most of northern Germany, including the separate free city of Lübeck, it went over to Lutheranism in the mid-sixteenth century and all its bishops were Lutherans after 1586. August Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp (born 1646, ruled 1666-1705) was the Lutheran Administrator of the Prince-Bishopric of Lübeck. This type was struck 1678 and 1688 at the peak of the fad for striking gulden (two-thirds thalers). Another gulden of 1678 (KM 61) had the bishop's monogram instead of his bust.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
