city and bishopric of Lübeck in 1648

This specimen was lot 11584 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €145 (about US$151). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Lübeck. 2/3 Taler, 1688. Lübeck Mint. August Friedrich. NGC EF-45. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Leopold Welzl v. Wellenheim Collection (Vienna-1846) Lot 5143." The bishopric of Lübeck was established in the twelfth century. Like most of northern Germany, including the separate free city of Lübeck, it went over to Lutheranism in the mid-sixteenth century and all its bishops were Lutherans after 1586. August Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp (born 1646, ruled 1666-1705) was the Lutheran Administrator of the Prince-Bishopric of Lübeck. This type was struck 1678 and 1688 at the peak of the fad for striking gulden (two-thirds thalers).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 16.93 g, silver, this specimen 16.41 g.

Catalog reference: KM-62; Lange 508; Bruun-15030.
