This specimen was lot 33213 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saxe-New-Gotha. Friedrich of Altenburg 2/3 Taler 1679 MS64 NGC. Fully lustrous with a strong strike for the type. Quite scarce." The first duchy of Saxe-Gotha having lapsed in 1638, a new Saxe-Gotha was erected in 1640 which lasted only until 1680, when it was divided. Most of its issues are scarce to rare.
