This specimen was lot 1315 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Ernst der Fromme, 1640-1675. Reichstaler 1675, Gotha, auf seinen Tod und seine Beisetzung. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Herrliche Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr attraktives, vorzügliches Exemplar. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Ernest the Pious, 1640-75, thaler of 1675, Gotha, on his death and funeral. Rare, especially in this quality, handsome patina, minor rim cracks, very attractive, extremely fine.)"
Ernest the Pious, duke of Saxe-Gotha, inherited Saxe-Altenburg in 1672 from its duke Frederick William III. Ernest's death in 1675 caused another reshuffle but his heir, Frederick I, managed to retain both Gotha and Altenburg and assumed the title of duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1680.
Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
Specification: silver.
