Künker sale 263, lot 1317

This specimen was lot 1317 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Friedrich I. allein, 1675-1680-1691. Doppelter Feinsilbertaler nach zinnaischem Fuß o. J. (ab 1683), Gotha. (dort als Feinsilberschautaler). RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick I, sole rule, 1680-91, undated double fine silver thaler (about 1683). Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The first duchy of Saxe-Gotha having lapsed in 1638, a new Saxe-Gotha was erected in 1640 which lasted only until 1680, when it was divided. This issue is from Sax-Gotha-Altenburg, one of the splinters thereof and is rare.
