This specimen was lot 4504 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Friedrich I. allein, 1675-1680-1691. Taler nach zinnaischem Fuß 1680, Gotha, auf den Bau des Schlosses Friedrichswerth. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 331, Osnabrück 2020, Nr. 514. (duchy of Saxe-Gotha, Frederick I, ruling alone, 1675-91, thaler of 1680, Gotha mint, on the construction of the Friedrichswerth castle. Very rare, attractive example with fine patina, edge cracks, extremely fine.)"

Ernest the Pious, duke of Saxe-Gotha, inherited Saxe-Altenburg in 1672 from its duke Frederick William III. Ernest's death in 1675 caused another reshuffle but his heir, Frederick I, managed to retain both Gotha and Altenburg and assumed the title of duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1680. His line survived until 1825. This type commemorated the construction of a new castle, the cost of which and the maintenance of a standing army ruined his duchy's finances.
