Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg 1684-IGW 1/4 ducat Fr-2966
This specimen was lot 2130 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, Friedrich I. allein, 1675-1680-1691. 1/4 Dukat 1684, Gotha. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha, Frederick I alone, 1675-1680-1691, quarter ducat of 1684, Gotha mint. Extremely rare, very fine.)"
Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One. One of its permutations, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, survived 1680-1826. This type is listed for 1682 and 1684.
