Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg 1673-MR thaler Dav-7459
This specimen was lot 709 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Taler, 1673. NGC AU Details--Tooled. Minor tooling. Commemorating the government transfer to the Principality of Altenburg. Rich iridescent toning. Nice details and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." Ernest the Pious, duke of Saxe-Gotha, inherited Saxe-Altenburg in 1672 from its duke Frederick William III. Ernest's death in 1675 caused another reshuffle but his heir, Frederick I, managed to retain both Gotha and Altenburg and assumed the title of duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1680. One of its permutations, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, survived 1680-1826.
