Künker Auction 441, lot 4499

This specimen was lot 4499 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,201 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Ernst der Fromme, 1640-1675. Reichstaler 1671, Gotha oder Eisleben. Sogenannter Sterbetaler. R Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. Zum Gewicht vgl. die Anmerkung bei Steguweit. Exemplar der Auktion Leipziger Münzhandlung 50, Leipzig 2006, Nr. 2860. (duchy of Saxe-Gotha, Ernest the Pious, 1640-75, "death" thaler of 1671, Gotha or Eisleben mint. Rare, handsome patina, extremely fine. Regarding the weight, see the note in Steguweit.)"

The duchy of Saxe-Gotha was created and lapsed more than once. This version was erected in 1640 and lasted until 1680, when it was partitioned among the seven surviving sons. This thaler was struck 1668 and 1671 and celebrates death. The 1671 issue is signed ABK, for Anton Bernhard Koburger, mintmaster in Eisleben 1667-1680, so we presume that that is where this was made.

Recorded mintage: 1,300.

Specification: 29 g, silver, this specimen 21,84 g.
