Saxe-Gotha 1671-ABK thaler Dav-7447
This specimen was lot 1372 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Gotha, Herzogtum, Ernst der Fromme, 1640-1675. Taler 1671, Gotha oder Eisleben. Katechismus- oder Glaubenstaler. Nach zinnaischem Fuss. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha, Ernest the Pious, 1640-75, thaler of 1671, Gotha or Eisleben mints, "Catechism" or "Faith" thaler, struck to the Zinna standard. Very Fine.)"
This is one of four different thalers struck for the duke in 1671; the others were Dav-7448, Dav-7451 and Dav-7453. All are expensive but this one is probably the most available. Ernst was duke of Saxe-Gotha from 1640 and duke of Saxe-Altenburg from 1672; the two duchies were formally merged on his death in 1675. His sons established the lines of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Saxe-Coburg, Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Romhild, Saxe-Eisenberg, Saxe-Hildburghausen and Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: silver, this specimen 29.09 g.
