Künker Auction 441, lot 4495

This specimen was lot 4495 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,926 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Ernst der Fromme, 1640-1675. Reichstaler 1668, Gotha. Katechismustaler. Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Leipziger Münzhandlung 50, Leipzig 2006, Nr. 2852. (duchy of Saxe-Gotha, Ernest the Pious, 1640-75, "catechism" thaler of 1668, Gotha mint. About extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Saxe-Gotha was created and lapsed more than once. This version was erected in 1640 and lasted until 1680, when it was partitioned among the seven surviving sons. This thaler promoted the Lutheran catechism and was struck again in 1671 at Eisleben. The reverse is inscribed, "Dŭ Herr bleibʃt 1. ewig wie dŭ biʃt 2. das höchʃte Gŭt 3. mit macht gerüʃt 4. weiʃt alles 5. biʃt an allem ort 6. führʃt alles weiʃlich 7. helʃt dein wortt 8. ʃchafʃt recht 9. thŭʃt gŭts 10. erbarmeʃt dich 11. ver gibʃt die Sŭnde gnädiglich", which Numista translates as, "You Lord remain 1. forever as you are; 2. the highest good; 3. equipped with power; 4. Know all; 5. Are in every place; 6. Lead all wisely; 7. keep your word; 8. establish justice; 9. do good; 10. have mercy; 11. forgive sin graciously".
