This specimen was lot 2109 in Goldberg sale 122 (Los Angeles, June 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxe-New-Gotha. 1/24 Taler (Groschen), 1675. Death of Ernst I, the Pious. Draped and armored bust right. Reverse: Nine line inscription with dates. NGC graded AU-58." This commemorative was accompanied by a quarter thaler (KM 64), half thaler (KM 65), gulden (KM 66), thaler (KM 67/Dav-7455 and KM 68/Dav-7458), 1½ thaler (KM 69.1/Dav-7457), double thaler (KM 71/Dav-7456), ducat (KM 73/Fr-2955), double ducat (KM 74.1), triple ducat (KM 75), 4 ducat (KM 76), 5 ducat (KM 77), and ten ducat (KM 78). Ernest the Pious, duke of Saxe-Gotha, inherited Saxe-Altenburg in 1672 from its duke Frederick William III. Ernest's death in 1675 caused another reshuffle but his heir, Frederick I, managed to retain both Gotha and Altenburg and assumed the title of duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1680.
