This specimen was lot 5650 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €500 (about US$696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 1/4 Reichstaler 1679, Zellerfeld, auf seinen Tod am 28. Dezember. RR Herrliche Tönung, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Dr. Ahlers, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 39, Osnabrück 1997, Nr. 3828. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, quarter thaler of 1679, Zellerfeld mint, on his death on December 28. Very rare, superb toning, extremely fine.)"

This is one of an extensive series of commemoratives marking the death of duke Joahnn Friedrich. Another quarter thaler was struck at Clausthal with initials "RB".
