Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1679-RB 1/2 thaler KM-223
This specimen was lot 5648 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,366 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 1/2 Reichstaler 1679, Clausthal, auf seinen Tod am 28. Dezember. Variante mit Münzzeichen RB, breiter Schrötling. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Dr. Stalling, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 15, Osnabrück 1990, Nr. 1288 und der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 27, Osnabrück 1994, Nr. 2775. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, half thaler of 1679, Clausthal mint, on his death on December 28. Variety with mintmaster's initials RB, broad planchet. Very scarce in this quality, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This is one of an extensive series of commemoratives marking the death of duke Joahnn Friedrich. Another half thaler was struck at Clausthal with initials "HB" along with one with a leaping stallion reverse.
