UBS sale 85, lot 274

This specimen was lot 274 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 209 CHF (about US$238 before buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND, Braunschweig-Lüneburg, Herzogtum, -Calenberg-Hannover, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 2/3 Taler 1679, Clausthal. Geharnischtes Brustbild mit grosser Perücke nach rechts. Rv. Palme auf Felsen im Meer, zu den Seiten zwei Segelschiffe, im Abschnitt in einem Oval die Wertzahl zwischen der Jahreszahl. Kl. Rdf. Gutes sehr schön." (Germany, Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, John Frederick, 1665-79, 2/3 thaler of 1679, Clausthal mint. Armored bust with full wig facing right; reverse: palm tree on island in sea with two sailing ships; date and denomination in exergue. Good Very Fine.)

The 2/3 thaler (and its close relative, the 24 mariengroschen) was a popular denomination in Brunswick for many years, however puzzling it may seem to modern day collectors used to decimal currency. The year 1679 saw the issue of six different designs of this denomination (KM C224, D224, E224, F224, F224, 224 and 225). This writer believes the specimen shown is KM C224.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14,65 g.

Catalog reference: Welter 1728, KM C224.
