Sincona sale 57, lot 2671

This specimen was lot 2617 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$238 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 24 Mariengroschen 1675, Clausthal. Dickstück. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, 24 mariengroschen of 1675, Clausthal mint. Thick planchet. Rare, Good very fine.)"

This type featuring St. Andrew on the obverse was struck 1672 and 1675. It was part of the fad in the 1670's for gulden (equals 24 mariengroschen or 2/3 thaler). In this period we also see KM 157, KM 158 (leaping stallion obverse), struck 1674-76, and KM 168, KM 169 (bust obverse/palm tree reverse) struck 1675.
