Künker sale 293, lot 656

This specimen was lot 656 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €220 (about US$297 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, HERZOGTUM Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 24 Mariengroschen 1675, Hannover. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, 24 mariengroschen of 1675, Hannover mint. Nice toning, very fine or better.)"

This type was struck 1675-76 in numerous varieties; some with the bust facing left, others with the bust facing right along with various arrangements of sailing ships on the reverse. These two-thirds thalers (or gulden) are often more available than the larger thalers.
