Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1677 2/3 thaler KM-187
The first specimen was lot 1529 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,155 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BRUNSWICK-CALENBERG, Johann Friedrich (1665-1679), AR Palmbaumgulden (2/3 Taler), 1677. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Palmier sur un îlot rocheux. Deux navires croisant au large vers la d. À la petite tête. Dans l'état de frappe. Rare dans cette qualité. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, silver "palm tree" gulden of 1677. Obverse: armored bust left; reverse: palm tree on a rocky island, two ships crossing the bay to the right. Small head, as struck, rare in this quality, Uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1676-79. Two thirds thaler = one gulden. John Frederick shocked his family by converting to Catholicism in 1651. He died in 1679, leaving only daughters, and was succeeded by his youngest brother Ernst Augustus. The second specimen was lot 42270 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 2/3 Taler, 1677. Clausthal Mint. Johann Friedrich I. PCGS MS-63. An alluring 2/3rd Taler featuring one of the more engaging scenic views on the reverse, this Choice exemplar offers soft brilliance and handsome orange tone. From the John P. Burnham Collection." Note the completely different bust on the obverse.
