Based on the similarities between the jaws, experts believe that the specimen actually comes from the famous dorsal-sailed Dimetrodon or a similar animal, although no fossil evidence of a dorsal sail has yet been found. The Northern Crown Bank was based in Manitoba, and had 111 branches when it was bought out by the Royal Bank in 1918. Until the late 1930s, most banknotes circulating in Canada in denominations of $5 and higher were issued by the chartered banks, and this was the primary paper money of Canada. The colors and spots adorning this graceful butterfly are an important adaptation aimed at protecting it. In fact, the Admiral butterfly has evolved to mimic a venomous butterfly, the Aristolochia butterfly. The limenitis arthemis astyanax closely resembles its close relative, the white admiral, a very common butterfly. The upper wing is a brilliant shade of bluish purple, highlighted by several rows of blue-white lines. The upper hindwing is embellished with lovely blue-green squares. Where their ranges overlap, the Admiral also bears the white bands that characterize the White Admiral. Admiral butterflies are most often found on the outskirts of wooded areas, on sunny gravel roads and in clearings.'"

Chases, discoveries and laughter are the order of the day with family and friends. We can't escape the bruises and tired knees, but they're soon forgotten. The hands that once helped us up now encourage us to stand on our own two feet. Inspired by time spent with his daughter, Douglas R. Laird painted this precious scene - now reproduced on a coin - that illustrates the pleasure of sharing good times with family, and encourages young people to realize their dreams. While skating has long been a popular winter pastime for Canadians, it's figure skating that has really taken off in Canada over the past century. The power, grace and beauty of the skaters, whether in singles or pairs, fires the imagination and inspires thousands of children every year to take part in one of Canada's many world-class figure skating programs."

Designed by artist Maurade Baynton, the reverse features a selectively colorized close-up view of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). The finely engraved backdrop showcases the forest, one of the deer's many habitats in Canada. As per the Royal Canadian Mint, 'In Canada, the white-tailed deer is the most common and widely distributed large mammal. If you spot one, it is likely grazing in woodland edges and pastures. However, the deer startles easily; at the first sign of trouble, it raises the alarm by flagging its brown tail to reveal a white underside (hence its name) as it gallops out of sight. Coin Number 3 of our Imposing Icons series invites you to look deep into the eyes of the white-tailed deer. This close encounter with such a large prey species is made possible by the coin's large (50 mm) diameter, which provides ample room for both the engraved wilderness and colorful wildlife.'"

As per the artist Robert Bateman, 'This piece began as a demonstration in front of a master class of wildlife artists in Wyoming. I wanted to show them the evolution of a painting from concept to finish starting with a gessoed masonite board. The most important part of the process is the struggling with the thinking and decisions. I played around with bold brush strokes, sketching on the blank board in front of the class, talking out loud and changing my mind many times. The ominous clouds and dark sky were not in the original scene but I needed them to bring out the blond highlights on the animal's fur. Of course I did not have time to finish it in the limited class time. That was done in succeeding weeks in the studio.'"
