Steve Album sale 55, lot 3254

This specimen was lot 3254 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA: Elizabeth II, 1952-2022, AR 20 dollars, 2013, Dinosaur Series - Bathygnathus Borealis, contains 1 troy ounce of pure silver, with COA and original Royal Canadian Mint case of issue, Proof. One of the first fossil discoveries to fascinate the Canadian imagination was Bathygnathus borealis, unearthed in 1845 near New London, Prince Edward Island. It wasn't until 1905 that the bone was correctly identified: a fragment of the upper jaw of a sphenacodontid, a member of the mammalian reptile family of pelycosaurs, or synapsids, animals that lived from the Late Pennsylvanian to the mid-Permian. Based on the similarities between the jaws, experts believe that the specimen actually comes from the famous dorsal-sailed Dimetrodon or a similar animal, although no fossil evidence of a dorsal sail has yet been found. If Bathygnathus resembled Dimetrodon, the large "sail" on its back is thought to have served to regulate body temperature."
