This specimen was lot 3648 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. 8 Escudos, 1861-Zs VL. Hand on book. Richard Long says 'AU & BU are Extremely Rare.' PCGS graded AU-55." The Zacatecas mint struck this type 1858-71. The SCWC rates this date as common. Zacatecas was a prolific issuer of all denominations of silver but the gold coins are not so common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.
