Mexico 1852-C CE 4 reales
This specimen was lot 73353 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1852-C CE. Culiacan Mint. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Fine Details. Though circulated and with a short scratch over the cap, this piece features clear legends and attractive charcoal toning. A nice representative for this RARE date." The Culiacan mint opened in 1846 to process ore from local mines. Like many other mints, it neglected the production of small change in favor of striking pesos for export. The SCWC reports five dates for the four reales (1846, 1850, 1852, 1858 and 1860) of which only the 1860 is common. Assayer CE operated 1846-70.
Recorded mintage: unknown but few.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
