Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 512

This specimen was lot 512 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £600 (about US$929 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic, 8 reales, San Luis Potosí mint, 1852 MC, normal assayer's mark, virtually mint state, toned." The San Luis Potosí mint, opened in 1827, was the first branch mint that had not previously been a royalist mint during the War of Independence. It also never struck gold. Eight reales are known for 1827-93 and most of the dates after the 1860's are common. Assayer MC is noted for 1849-60.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rather scarce.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, 0.785 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 377.12, DP-Pi31.
