Mexico 1852/1-Do JMR 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 1225 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted,
"MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1852/1 Do JMR. Durango. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Slightly prooflike surfaces exhibit satiny centers and a few very faint scratches. The strike is shallow but the central devices are reasonably well defined. Moderate planchet flaws on the reverse rims, one touching the R of REPUBLICA and a couple of smaller ones below the wreath. A rare issue, and as noted in Richard A. Long's reference work, before the 11 examples that came out in the 1990-94 Sotheby's auctions, this date was virtually unknown. Choice Extremely Fine."
The Durango mint struck eight escudos 1832-70 and is one of the abundant mints tho less so than Culiacan or Guanajuato; many dates are common. The eagle is distinctive to Durango and can be found on all the silver and gold denominations.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
