Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 57610
SB124-57610 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 57610 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Durango. 2 Reales, 1852-Do JMR. Durango Mint. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Genuine." This is one of a type struck at the Durango mint 1826, 1832-35 and 1841-61. Assayer JMR is recorded for the years 1849-52. The Durango two reales is considerably scarcer than the catalog indicates but makes up for it with a fascinating local design, the large eagle is distinctive to this mint. The SCWC lists this as a common date but, judging from the price realized, the buyer thought otherwise. Many consider the Durango mintmark to be common on pre-decimal issues but that is only true of the eight reales and half escudos. The half, one and two reales are scarce to rare and no four reales are known to exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-374.4.
