Mexico 1850-GC MP 2 reales

Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 51332

This specimen was lot 51332 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1850-GC MP. Guadelupe y Calvo Mint. PCGS MS-63. The penultimate date in the series, this VERY RARE minor presents a remarkable level of quality that is exceedingly difficult to encounter. As such, a piece that should undoubtedly generate a great deal of fanfare and enthusiasm. Not surprisingly, the only example of the date seen in the PCGS census." Shown is an 1850-GC MP 2 reales, one of a type struck at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint 1844-51 with assayer MP recorded for all dates. Other mints include Guanajuato, Mexico City, Alamos, Hermosillo, Zacatecas, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Potosi, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Mexico City. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date of a scarce mint.
